1980. A rusting ferry cuts through the calm blue waters of the Aegean as it heads towards the Greek island of Astypalea, the tourists in sleeping bags on the back deck lightly covered in the oil that belches out of the smokestacks. One man stands at the railing, watching: Josef was supposed to come here on his honeymoon, but Phoebe, his wife to be left him at the altar. Shattered, heavy-hearted,  he came here anyway, hoping that somehow she will come to her senses and join him. When he lands, he discovers an island of jokers and lunatics who adopt instantly, even though his heaviness makes him unable to dance. Incomprehensible! Over the course of nine months, thanks to the non-stop humor and an astonishing Greek woman he falls in love with, he comes back to life, and finally finds the lightness to dance again.
